‘Lovers’ by Anna of the North was pounding through the speakers when we pulled up outside Laura’s house, and because I loved the tune, I let the rhythm rush through me and danced a little in the parking lot.

The party was in full swing now because we’d headed for my place so I could get changed after the game—no way I was wearing fancy shit in the bleachers. It didn’t take me long to get ready. I never dressed up for this crap. Some of the girls did. Laura was wearing a dress emblazoned with LV and even if I didn’t shop there myself, I wasn’t blind—the Sarahs were all wearing matching Gucci in coordinating colors.

If it wasn’t so funny, it would be sickening what they spent on their wardrobe. That was money for you though. Money and privilege.

I knew that sounded hypocritical. My mom was loaded, and as a family, we were too. Our house was big, we all drove nice cars, and we’d never want for anything because Mom’s trust fund was so damn ancient, it would be keeping my grandkids comfortable. But she’d raised us differently. Aaron and I were used to having a maid around the house, but our personal space? Like our bedrooms, bathrooms, and the dens? We had to look after those places whereas the only sponges the Sarahs had probably picked up were beautyblenders.

We had limited allowances that were topped up as a reward for good grades, and if I won a debate match, then I earned more. Yeah, privileged, again. But I wasn’t a jackass about it.

Here I was in a white tee that was cut down the back so that I could feel Sam’s hand when he pressed it there, a pair of jean cutoffs and black tights that were patterned with the looping teardrops-shapes of paisley. I wore red Converse sneakers and didn’t give a fuck that I looked casual in the face of the rest of the girls who had probably spent a fortune on their outfits.

I saw no point to it.

Sarah Aspen was with her boyfriend—Harry Greaves. He, like Drew and Sam, wore jeans and a tee. Sarah looked so over-the-top in a skintight bodycon dress beside him that it was crazy.

If they chose to criticize me for it later, then so be it. It wouldn’t be the first time I was on their “HawkRidgeHottiesAndNotties” Insta account.

I’d survive another brush with them.

Laura’s house was in the same subdivision as mine, but whereas my home was old fashioned and Colonial in style, hers was all glass and steel. It overlooked the lake too, but it was cold and sterile, even if their infinity pool kicked ass because it looked like you could swim from the pool into the lake itself.

There were three levels and there was a party on each one. Because of the way it was set up, three different songs played, and we headed up to the top floor where there were some acoustic beats and a more relaxed vibe.
